The coaching business, written down.

What we've learned building for coaches and families. Kept practical, updated in place, never a content mill.

Tennis

For tennis coaches and families.

Guides

Guide · Rainouts

The rain-day playbook.

Rain is the one truly unbeatable opponent an outdoor coach faces, and you can't schedule around it. What you can do is decide in advance exactly what happens when it wins, so a rained-out Saturday costs you thirty seconds instead of a lost evening of phone calls and a week of arguing about credits.

Guide · Lesson packs

Price the pack, not the lesson.

Per-lesson billing turns every single lesson into a purchasing decision. That's fifty small chances a season for a family to waver, and fifty small invoices for you to chase. A pack flips it into one decision and one payment, and a family committed to the next ten weeks of showing up.

Guide · Cancellations

A cancellation policy parents actually respect.

Having no cancellation policy is itself a policy: whatever you can bring yourself to enforce, decided at the worst possible moment, and differently every time. Families don't resent clear rules; they resent surprises and unfairness. Writing the policy down protects everyone, you included.

Guide · Starting out

From good player to paid coach.

Plenty of strong players try coaching, but the ones who build a living at it treat it as a business from the first lesson. The tennis is the product, but court access, a clear offer, and money plumbing that works are what turn a skill into an income.

Guide · Lesson planning

How to plan a tennis lesson.

A good lesson has a shape. The hour that wanders, a little serving, some rallying, a game if there's time, teaches less than the same hour with a plan behind it, and it is harder on you because you are deciding what comes next while a hopper of balls rolls around your feet. A plan fixes both. Here is a structure that works for privates and clinics alike, how to time it, and how to make each session move a number you can show a parent.

Guide · Lesson planning

A tennis lesson plan template, block by block.

The best lesson plan is the one you will reuse. Below are two templates written out in full, a 60-minute private and a 90-minute junior clinic, with times, a focus for each block, and a benchmark built in. Take them as they are or bend them to your court and your students. Either way, the point is to start every session from a structure instead of a blank hour.

Guide · For families

What tennis lessons cost, honestly.

There's no national price sheet for tennis lessons; rates are local and the spread is wide. What stays consistent everywhere is the structure of the pricing, and knowing that structure is what lets you compare two coaches fairly instead of comparing two numbers blind.

Guide · For families

Choosing your kid's tennis coach.

The résumé tells you the coach can play. What you're actually paying for is harder to see on paper: can they teach, will your kid want to come back next week, and does the season run like an organized program or a scramble of last-minute texts.

Guide · For coaches

Tracking player progress without turning it into a video game.

A parent paying for lessons wants to know whether the lessons are working. Most coaches carry the answer in their heads, so most parents never actually receive it, and an unanswered version of that question is what quietly becomes churn. Badges, streaks, and leaderboards don't solve it; a record does: a few drills measured over time, plain charts, and your own written notes. The whole point of the system below is that a busy coach will actually keep it going.

Guide · For coaches

Benchmark drills: measuring junior progress with real numbers.

A benchmark is any drill that yields one clean number under repeatable conditions. Run the same drill the same way every six or eight weeks and you produce the one thing every parent is paying to see and no résumé can fake: a curve. None of it needs sports science or sensors. Coaches have been point-scoring skill tests since the 1930s. What it needs is a handful of drills, fixed protocols, and the discipline to write the number down.

Guide · For families

Why kids quit tennis, and what keeps them playing.

The statistics are blunter than most parents expect. In the Aspen Institute's national survey, the average age a kid quits an organized sport is about 13, right when they're finally getting good, and the most common reason given is simply that it stopped being fun. A widely cited 2016 youth-sports poll put the share of kids leaving organized sports by their early teens near 70%. Tennis sits squarely inside those numbers. What helps is that "fun" isn't a mystery: the research pulls it apart, and most of the pieces are things a parent and a coach can genuinely influence.

Guide · For families

UTR, WTN, NTRP: a calm guide for tennis parents.

Sooner or later your junior gets a number, and the number starts doing things to the adults. The plain translation is that all three major ratings are results algorithms: they compress match outcomes into a scale, which is useful but narrow. None of them measures technique, effort, coachability, or how much better your kid is than a year ago at the things their coach is actually building. Below is what each rating is, how juniors get one, and how to keep it in proportion.

The software

Software · Scheduling

Tennis lesson scheduling that starts with a link.

Most scheduling software is built for a front desk, and a private tennis pro doesn't have one. You have a phone, a fence, and the next lesson in four minutes. Upswing's scheduling starts from that reality: one booking link parents use themselves, so the calendar fills without you touching it.

Software · Payments

Get paid like a business, not like a favor.

A full-time pro can run tens of thousands of dollars a year through a personal payment app, chasing half of it by text, tracking pack balances from memory, and reconstructing income by hand in April. That's a liability with a friendly logo.

Software · Practice planning

Tennis practice plan software, and what it should actually do.

Search for tennis practice plan software and you get three different things wearing one name: a place to draw drills, a notes app someone repurposed, and a stack of PDFs. All three help you write a plan down. None of them help you run it. Here is an honest tour of the category, what a plan becomes when it is wired into the rest of your coaching, and who each option actually fits.

Comparisons

Compare · CoachIQ

A CoachIQ alternative shaped for the solo pro.

CoachIQ and Upswing aren't built for the same customer. CoachIQ is a broad platform: booking, packs, parent portals, a website builder, automations, multi-pro facility plans. For an academy with staff, that breadth is a serious advantage. Upswing is a narrower tool for a narrower customer. A solo pro doesn't need a marketing suite. They need the fence-side loop (book, pay, check in, rain out) done well, plus something no coach platform has built: a structured record of every player's progress that families can actually watch.

Compare · TennisLocker

A TennisLocker alternative built for the solo pro.

Two questions decide this one: do you run an academy, and do you want your players ranked against each other? TennisLocker is built for programs that answer yes to both. Its published materials cover daily evaluations, fitness testing, match records, and rankings dashboards, and academies rely on it. A solo pro's needs point elsewhere: the development record plus the business underneath it (booking, packs, payments, rainouts) in one place, without an academy's price shape or its leaderboards.

Compare · CoachNow

A CoachNow alternative for a different job.

CoachNow is genuinely good at what it is: a training-communication app where each athlete gets a private media feed (a “Space”) and the coach posts video with slow-motion analysis, annotations, and notes. If frame-by-frame video review is the center of your coaching, it earns its subscription. But calling it a coaching platform stretches the word: there's no structured progress data, and the business of coaching (booking, packs, payments, policies) mostly isn't there. Upswing starts from the opposite end.

Compare · Facility software

Your club runs CourtReserve. Your business shouldn’t.

Play this out from the teaching pro's side. The club you work at runs CourtReserve or something like it, and that software does the club's job well: court inventory, memberships, programs, front-desk operations. None of that is your business, though. Your client relationships, your pack economics, your progress records, and your income live wherever you decide to put them, and a facility system was never built to be that place.

How much do private volleyball lessons cost?

In most U.S. markets, a one-hour private volleyball lesson runs about $50 to $100. Former college players and position specialists charge more, and some coaches add a court fee on top because they rent the gym by the hour. Below are published rates from real clubs and academies, what moves the number, how packages and cancellation policies usually work, and what a family should expect to walk away with after the hour.

Guide · For coaches

How much to charge for private volleyball lessons.

Most volleyball coaches set their first rate by asking a friend what they charge. That gets you a number, but it skips the two costs that decide whether private lessons are worth your evenings: the court you rent and the families who cancel late. This guide starts from published market rates, works through the real cost of an hour, and ends with package and policy choices you can apply to every family the same way.

Guide · For coaches

Volleyball practice plan template (60, 90, and 120 minutes).

A practice plan is a list of timed blocks that add up to the session, with one purpose per block. This page writes out a two-hour team practice based on the structure Gold Medal Squared publishes, cuts it down to 90 and 60 minutes, and adapts it to a one-player private lesson. Each block names drills you can drop in, and every version includes a measured benchmark so the plan leaves a record behind.

Guide · For coaches and clubs

Volleyball skills evaluation form: a rubric every evaluator reads the same way.

An evaluation form is only useful if two evaluators watching the same rep write down the same score. That takes anchored definitions for each number, a few objective measures that do not depend on opinion, and a method you repeat exactly. This guide builds the form field by field, from a 1 to 5 skill rubric to pass ratings, serve zones, and jump measures, and shows how to carry tryout scores into the season as each player's starting point.

Guide · For coaches

How to track a volleyball player's progress.

Parents paying for lessons want to know whether the lessons are working. Most coaches can tell them, but only in words: she is reading the serve earlier, his platform is steadier. Volleyball already has simple, standard measures that turn those words into numbers. This guide covers the ones worth using, how to run them the same way each time, how often to re-test, and how to show the results to a family without overpromising.

Guide · For coaches

Volleyball drills that work in a private lesson.

Most volleyball drills are written for a team of twelve. A private lesson has one player and a coach, sometimes two to four players, and that changes what works. The coach becomes the server, the hitter, and the setter, and the player gets far more contacts than in any team practice. Below are drills for each position and skill, written for that setting, each with a simple way to score it so the lesson produces a number.

Guide · For coaches

How to start a volleyball training business.

Plenty of volleyball coaches already give private lessons on the side, booked by text and paid by payment app. Turning that into a business means solving the parts that side work ignores: reliable court access, prices that cover the court, a calendar built around club and high school seasons, written policies, and a way for families to see what they are paying for. This guide walks through each, with published numbers where they exist.

The software

Software · Scheduling

Scheduling and payments software for volleyball coaches.

Most volleyball software is built for the club or the match: membership and rostering, tournament brackets, match film. A coach who sells private lessons, semi-privates, and clinics on rented courts needs something else. Upswing gives you one booking link, offerings with the capacity you set, credit packs and cancellation rules that apply themselves, session plans you run on court, and a player record families can open.

Golf

For golf instructors and families.

Guides

Guide · Lesson prices

What golf lessons cost in 2026.

In most U.S. markets a private lesson from a certified instructor runs about $60 to $150 for an hour, and about $30 to $75 for thirty minutes. Top coaches and resort academies charge more. Those endpoints come from published rate cards we read in September 2026, listed below, so you can see where a quote you've been given sits and what the price usually includes.

Guide · Pricing

How to price golf lesson packages and memberships.

Golf instructors sell lessons in three shapes: the single lesson, the prepaid pack, and the monthly membership. Most established teachers run all three. Below are real U.S. rate cards for each shape, the discount math, how facility fees change it, and a worked example you can adapt to your own numbers.

Guide · Lesson planning

A golf lesson plan template for private lessons.

A student leaves most golf lessons remembering one thing. The plan is what carries the rest: what you measured, what you changed, and what they should practice before next time. Below is a seven-block template with minute splits for 30 and 60 minutes, the research behind the practice structure, three worked example plans, and the practice plan you send home.

Guide · Junior golf

Junior golf practice plans by age.

Just under 4 million juniors aged 6 to 17 played on a golf course in 2025, the most in any year since 2004, according to the National Golf Foundation. Girls made up 35% of them, up from 15% in 2000. Most of those kids learn in groups, and the quality of a junior clinic comes down to its plan: how the time is split, how many kids each coach has, what gets scored, and what parents hear afterward. Here is a plan for each part, built on USA Golf's American Development Model.

Guide · Starting out

How to become a golf instructor and start a coaching business.

Teaching golf for a living takes three things beyond a good swing: a credential that facilities and students trust, a place to teach on terms that leave you a margin, and a business that books, bills, and keeps students coming back. This guide covers each, with the numbers behind the market and a checklist for the first 90 days.

Guide · Assessment

Golf skills assessments: tests, stats, and what to track.

A number you can repeat is more useful than a lesson that "felt better." This guide covers the stats coaches track from rounds, strokes gained in plain terms with a worked example, the launch monitor numbers worth recording, the named skills tests and how they are scored, and a scoresheet you can run with tees and a tape measure.

Guide · For families

Golf handicaps explained for parents.

A Handicap Index describes a golfer's potential on a good day, adjusted for how hard the courses were. It is not an average score, and that one point causes most of the confusion. This guide covers how the number is calculated under the World Handicap System, how a junior gets one, what the maximum and plus handicaps mean, and what a handicap cannot tell you about your child's progress.

The software

Software · Golf instructors

Golf lesson booking software with progress and billing built in.

A private golf instructor runs a small business inside someone else's facility. There is a lease or a revenue share to account for, range or bay time, weather that cancels a morning of lessons, packs and memberships to keep straight, and parents who pay for junior lessons without seeing them. Upswing puts the booking, the billing, and each student's progress record in one place, built for the person who teaches.

Any sport

Written for coaches of any sport.

The software

Software · Waivers

Waiver software that knows your schedule.

A waiver you cannot enforce is just a file. Standalone tools like Smartwaiver and WaiverForever are good at collecting a signature, and paper is good at nothing, but both stop at the same place: they have no idea who is booked for Saturday's clinic or who is about to walk onto the court unsigned. So the enforcement, the part that actually protects you, falls back on you remembering to check. Upswing puts the waiver where the booking is, so the checking happens on its own.

Comparisons

Compare · The free stack

The free stack isn't free.

Calendar app, personal payment app, and text threads: the default operating system of private coaching. It costs nothing per month and plenty per year. You pay in hours, awkward conversations, and lessons you never got paid for.

Compare · Sportplan

A Sportplan alternative that runs the session on court.

Sportplan, CoachThem, and The Coaching Manual are good at a real job: they are drill libraries and drawing tools, big catalogs of diagrammed, animated drills with a canvas for sketching a session. If browsing drills and drawing up practices is what you want, they do it well. Where they stop is the same place for all of them: the plan is a document, and it has no idea which lesson you booked, who is enrolled, or what you measured last time. Upswing starts from the booked session and builds the plan onto it, inside the product that already handles the booking, the credits, and the payment.
